JOG-LE Epilogue 16/5/08

“It’s something unpredictable, but in the end that’s right. I hope you had the time of your life”

As I rode into Penzance Station, these were the words I heard. Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day somehow managed to get the trip summed up in a sentence. Not sure it refers only to the ride, but this year in general. i know Rich is up there laughing as I repeatedly test and humiliate myself this year. (But I guess I wouldn’t have it any other way.)

There were a couple of things I forgot to mention about Land’s End yesterday, which made it all the more special. Soon after I arrived lots of people in Hi-Vis vests came rushing out – I thought it was nice of them to organise a welcoming committee but they ignored me and started to clear a huge space in the car park. It quickly became apparent why, as an air ambulance helicopter slid into view and into the space to pick someone up. The noise was amazing, and if i thought the draft from some of the lorries was bad, it had nothing on the wind from the copter blades.

Soon after I’d finished my ride, another cyclist rode into the center, you could tell from the grin that he had just finished – but he wouldn’t get off his bike. his cycle computer showed 998.4 miles and as he was being picked up by his parents from Land’s End he was doing a few laps of the car park to reach the magical 1,000 mile barrier.

The last thing was a strange meeting, as I stood in one of the attractions of Land’s End I saw someone I recognised, in the hostel in Exeter there was a young asian man who was now also wandering around. It turns out he had travelled down by bus, but beyond that I still have no idea what he was doing in the UK.

Before leaving the hostel, I asked for their End to End book and made my little entry. If I had had the chance I would have turned the bike around and cycled straight back up was about the gist of it.

The ride to Penzance was pleasant and not too taxing, I almost felt lost with only 9 miles to cover and with around five hours to do it in. I got to the station and realised i could have made the 10am train but decided to let it go, in order to get changed and eat some breakfast.

I’m going to explore the town of Penzance a little and see a few things on foot as opposed to two wheels for a change.

JOG-LE Day 15 Boswinger to Land’s End 15/5/08

Well dear diary, there has to be an end to every journey and now this little bike ride is over. the day started with a splash through the spiders web of little B roads from the hostel. After a thunderstorm overnight the roads were covered in puddles. These were not that bad, but it does cause you to get covered in spots of muddy water.

Finally getting onto the road to Truro, I still had the question of whether I was going to take in Lizard Point or go straight to Land’s End. I’d taken a look at the weather forecast and despite it being a bit gloomy and colder than the last few days thought the rain would hold off. Despite this I decided to go with the sensible option and head directly for Land’s End.

I’d started the day with a plan to grab some food around Redruth, at a service station, perhaps I should have checked whether there were service stops on the A30. A number of early hills left me running on empty, and as Redruth became a figure in the distance I was feeling horrid.

I kept passing signs for Helston, which was the route to Lizard, but time and again I rode on, my plan was never Dunnet’s Head to Lizard Point, maybe next time I do a long ride I will do the extremities furthest North / South / East and West in the UK.

I finally found a service station at the Hayle Junction, where I grabbed a few bites to eat. one thing about this journey is i’m almost ashamed at how bad my diet has been on this trip, yet somehow my body has ploughed on regardless. If I consider what i’ve been eating the most regular foods have been Ginster’s Ploughman’s Rolls, Cadbury’s fruit and nut chocolate bars and Dr Pepper.

The strangest thing happened as I went past Penzance, at that point the only thing left on the street signs was Land’s End, seeing there was only 10 miles left, it should have acted as a spur, like the Cornwall sign but it was like Kryptonite and everything went from my legs.

Granted the road became a big hill onto the headland but I had nothing, the next few miles felt like a dozen each. I had to give myself a little pep talk and when I saw the five miles to go sign everything began to make sense. I’d done something like 970 miles to this point and this was the finishing straight. Finally I felt something coming back into my legs and I could focus on the last couple of miles.

At some point today I called my bike girl, as in ‘nearly there girl’; I hadn’t realised how attached I’d got to it, but as I mentioned before you are totally reliant on it and  have had absolutely no problems – (not even a puncture.)

Getting Closer to Land’s End lots went through my mind, one of these was the odd hope that I’d pass 15 Red Lion pubs to meet my challenge, sadly there were none on this stretch of road. I did stop at the First and Last Inn to take a few photos like I had in Gretna.

Getting to Land’s End was a very odd feeling. I stopped next to the sign for some photos and took a long look around.

It’s a weird place that is strangely dominated by a Dr Who exhibit. I’d ridden nearly a thousand miles to end up at what is basically a sub rate Chessington World of adventures – it started to make the entire thing seem pointless.

Land’s End is actually a lighthouse, but as it was quite misty the picture didn’t come out too well.

I made a couple of phonecalls to people to let them know I had made it, like my mum and to Malcolm, who had acted as my base every night, where i had to call in and let him know I am safe. I also called my friend Mark in Spain then sat down to text a few others to let them know i’d made it. By the time I’d finished typing the message i’d already had 2 texts back congratulating me, it’s incredible how quickly news can travel.

I had a call from a couple of friends who were travelling down to Land’s End, they had hoped to get here before me with banners and stuff to celebrate my finishing, but due to lots of traffic near Exeter due to the Devon County Show, I beat them by a couple of hours.

We met up in the First and Last Inn, where I was also able ot meet the newest member of their family, Charlotte Lord who was 23 days old.

It made my day that they had travelled around 150 miles to come and see me. Charlotte was lovely, and remarkably quiet. It was weird – I guess all they have talked about is babies for 3 weeks and wanted a change of subject, whilst all I had considered was cycling for 15 days and I needed to chat about anything else. that said we had a great evening.

I left them to go down to the attractions at Land’s End, whilst I went to the hostel to get cleaned up. we arranged to meet in later that evening for a few drinks.

I got to the hostel and there was a strange occurrence, I was not booked in, the lady behind the desk said it was usual and I was probably booked into Penzance, so I was given a key to a room as they had plenty of space.

The evening went quickly with laughter and a few drinks. Now it’s time for sleep. Tomorrow is a very different day, only a few miles to the station then a long journey on the train. What am I going to do with myself?

JOG-LE Day 14 Exeter to Boswinger 14/5/08

Having woken a little blurred and hungry, I realised that a bag of nuts and five pints on a days ride and not much fuel was a bit of a mistake, with three toilet breaks in the night and a desperate scramble for water to rehydrate, I realised it was probably not the best preparation for one of the most notorious stretches on the end-to-end trip.

Having given some thought to the ride options I decided to err on the side of caution and take the A30 dual carriageway for 62 miles from Exeter to Bodmin. The only way to describe it is relentless, the hills came along like waves, one after another, thankfully none were dire steep, just a series of long drags uphill then sharp descents, if I thought it was bad, I’d hate to have been attempting it from the other direction.

I did my usual start to a ride putting in about 20 miles before stopping for breakfast, it might not be the most glamorous of venues but in a layby around half a mile past Okehampton I had to get some fuel into my body, and it tasted great – A crushed malt loaf I’d had in the bag for about a week, a chocolate bar and a Lucozade hydrating drink vanished down and I instantly felt better.

The next target was Launceston which marked the start of Bodmin Moor, on this ride I’d come to expect the unexpected, but even i could not have predicted what was about to happen.A blue car went past me and pulled into a parking bay, the driver got out and flagged me down. I did a quick check and both my bags were still on sealed so I couldn’t have dropped anything so I slowed to a top next to the car.

The driver turned out to be a man called Peter Hume-Spry who is the past president of the Land’s End – John O’Groats club, who had done the ride himself an incredible 8 times. He urged me to join his club and talked about the event they hold every January to celebrate people making the journey. As sales pitches go, it was certainly passionate and a welcome break to the monotony of the A30.

Launceston also had a second point of appeal as it marked the crossing of the border into Cornwall my final county on the route. I had a little surge from seeing this sign, it felt like going round the final bend and seeing the home straight in front of you.

Turning towards St Austell, the ride decided to bare its teeth again, i’m not exactly sure but i am doubting Mount Everest is the worlds highest point, it’s actually on the outskirts of St Austell where you turn for the Eden Project. The road just goes up and up and up. Maybe that explains the popularity of the Eden Project, it’s so high it almost feels celestial, turn left at the exotic plants and there’s St Michael sat at his desk by the pearly gates. The air’s so thin up there, how do the plants grow?

After coming down from base camp, I aimed for Mevagissey, which is a place i remembered from my youth. I went on a holiday there when I was about 10 or 11 and as Iturned the bend to Pentewen Sands it all came flooding back. The very place I stayed was directly in front of me, I stopped and looked around for a short while. I think it was the last family holiday we had with my mum and dad together which seemed a million years ago now.

After stopping for a quick photograph, I got back on the bike to find the town of Boswinger in the spiders web of B roads. One of which went past the famous Lost Gardens of Heligan (How could they lose them in the first place? It’ss called Heligan on the map)

The roadsign for the hostel turned me away before the town of Mevagissey which was a shame as I really fancied fish and chips on the seafront, but after 90 miles with the weather closing in I went straight for the hostel.

It’s remarkably busy with ramblers and a school group in, thankfully they have a chef at the hostel so I was able to get a meal tonight without having to walk a mile to the nearest pub in flip flops.

Tomorrow is my final day, again I have options, as I visited Dunnett Head when going to John O’Groats I feel I should visit Lizard Point the most Southernly point of the UK. I guess I’ll aim for Truro and see what the weather is like.

One tiny thing, I’ve seen lots of flags with a white cross on a black background. I found out today it’s the flag for Cornwall and St Piran. I thought this was serendipitous as I adopted a seal called Piran a few months ago for one of my challenges.

JOG-LE Day 13 Street to Exeter (via Bradninch) 13/5/08

This entry is slightly different from all before as it’s not been written on the night after the ride but the day after, this is primarily as I didn’t know what to say last night and I had an appointment to make.

In my original plans I thought Bradninch was under Exeter, but looking at the maps properly I had to change my  route and I was pleased I did. The ride between Street and Taunton was lovely, going through the Somerset Levels amongst the bird sanctuaries.

After Taunton you could feel the terrain start to change, the Black Down Hills brought some big climbs with the road to Ulfculme going up for an eternity. My next point in the journey was Cullompton, I had been warned by Richard’s dad about the hill, I was coasting through the town thinking what hill? When the road to Bradninch revealed itself.

Bradninch to me was possibly the most important point in the ride. I hadn’t been there in a little under ten years when Richard was buried. I made my way into the graveyard and took a seat on one of the benches. I looked through all of the headstones but couldn’t find Richard, so I took the seat to spend a little time talking to Richard and trying to get my thoughts in order. in my memory Richard was buried beside a tree. Not finding his headstone was upsetting, but finding the stone wasn’t as important as being there. I spent around an hour in the shadow of the church before I got back onto the bike and started to head towards Exeter.

The rest of the ride seemed to go by quite quickly, to tell the truth it was a blur, as i was still in amongst the stones in my head, but despite my city navigation curse striking again I soon found myself at the hostel.

I sat down to write this blog entry, but I couldn’t concentrate and my mind kept wandering, so i read the newspaper, then got washed and changed to go into Exeter City Centre to meet Richard’s parents at a huge pub called The Imperial, with a huge glass window.

I sometimes wonder if doing these fund raising things in Richard’s memory is a good or bad thing for his family. Every year I do something and it must bring all the memories back. I know they will never forget, but I am worried that my efforts don’t allow him to rest in peace.

When growing up Richard and I were very close, and I looked on George as a bit of a father figure, we often went fishing as a group and it was one of the first things he asked about. It’s strange but the things which bonded us as a group are still very important. One of the things which i hold dear is a log book that Richard and I used to keep after our trips. It had remained at my mums house until she moved last year, when she was cleaning out my room she found a number of books, which included the log book and gave it to me. Its in a mixture of both our handwriting but looking at the entries I remember every single day we went out.

The night with George and Ann was lovely, we had a few drinks and talked a lot about the ride and the other strange challenges that I have been set. They drove me back to the hostel where I sat down to consider my options for today.

Looking at the map I had 3 choices – along a busy dual carriageway for just over 60 miles, the less busy, but notoriously hilly road beneath Dartmoor through Plymouth, or the Death or Glory route straight through Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor.

I should mention the other lady who was staying at Street Hostel, her name was Julie, and was just setting off on her ride. If anything she was even less prepared than I felt when I first set off. To give an example she didn’t even have a lock for her bicycle for when she needed to pop into a shop for supplies. I had been carrying 2 locks since John O’Groats and barely used one of them, I gave her a lock and keys, so at least she’ll have some kind of security. It’s amazing how attached and reliant you become on your bike and the worst thing would be for someone to steal it and scupper the chance to complete the ride.

PS. The White Hart in Bradninch is the place to be on the 23rd, they’ve secured the booking of the millenium – Elvis is performing!

JOG-LE Day 12 Slimbridge to Street 12/5/08

Back on the road this morning after a restless sleep. Outside of my room last night there was a pond with various noisy ducks and geese. The room was also very warm despite only sleeping under a sheet.

This meant I was up quiet early, and on the road before eight. The twenty plus miles to Bristol flew past, nice open roads and not many hills. I was going through fields and little villages, before hitting the city… I’ve been wary of cities since Glasgow and I fear it might be a self fulfilling prophecy.

Bristol didn’t disappoint. I was happily following the signs for the A37 which then absolutely vanished. I ended up doing 2 loops of the city taking about 45 minutes to get on the right road.

The next challenge was the Mendip Hills between Farrington and Wells. I’ve been told horror stories about the hills in devon and Cornwall, but Somerset had an early tester. Chewton Medip has a crawler lane for a reason, the hill was huge steep and very long.

Once I reached the top the mendips weren’t so bad, but there was an amazing obelisk on the top which semed to be pointing directly to the sky, it made me thing of the film the fifth element. I tried to work out what it was but on my map that is just called Danger Area, which in a way made it even more interesting.

Having crossed the top of the hills I started the journey down into Wells. In places it’s really steep and about half way down there’s a big sign saying TEST YOUR BRAKES; I did and they felt a bit soft, so I made my mind to find a bike shop in the town as I feared my brake blocks had worn down in the hills of Scotland.

I quickly found a bike shop in Wells and after a quick look the man in the shop said no problems with the blocks, he made a  couple of quick adjustments and I was back on my way, but now able to stop sharply again.

Leaving Wells I was only 4 miles from Glastonbury, I kept looking for Michael Eavis’s farm as I wanted to take a photograph of the cows messing about by the Pyramid Stage, but no joy. That said i learned why the radio station at the festival is called Radio Avalon, as there is a huge industrial estate called Avalon on the road between Glastonbury and Street.

The hostel I am staying at said it opened at five so I decided to bit of touring around. I rode into Glastonbury Town Centre – if only to prove to myself that the place exists outside of the music festival.

Next stop was Street, which is famous for one thing Clark’s Shoes. The town centre has a Clark’s Village which sold discount footwear and also had a shoe museum… well, you get the idea. I grabbed a roll in the shade by the outdoor swimming pool and wasted a little time, doing my daily tasks like phoning people to tell them I was safe.

As I’ve eaten out virtually every night, I decided to buy some food to cook tonight, from the local farm shop. The farm had various animals running around like geese and ducks, but looking at how busy the farm was I am not sure how long they’re going to continue to be anywhere apart from on a dinner plate.

I got to the hostel early to try and find some shade and read the paper with the reports about the end of the Premiership football season. Getting let in early I found out there’s only one other guest here tonight, a lady who runs a YHA Hostel in the Peak district who is three days into her own Land’s End to John O’Groats journey.

Over the course of tonight, I’m going to try and get as much information about the last 200 miles of this trip as possible. Tomorrow is quite a short flat one, but it does include a trip to the cemetery where Richard is buried. I might be meeting his mum in the daytime, to show me the grave, if not I’ll try and meet them in Exeter when George’s train gets in.

Been looking at the maps and Exeter to St Austell is going to be tough whichever way it happens, I think the weather will influence the route I choose – the death or glory version certainly looks the shortest option but by far the toughest, I’ll have to sleep on it.

It’s very strange to wake up to the sound of an animal grazing, but that’s what happened. The bunkhouse was located in the National Trust area the Long Mynd and walking to the dorm you have to cross cattle grids and go past various animals.

I heard an odd ripping sound and I had to look out the window to see what it was. I found myself face to face with a sheep looking back with a stubborn look on its face. Given it was 5:30 I wasn’t impressed, so I put my head down and tried to imagine pots of mint sauce leaping over gates to fall asleep again.

I set off around 7am, the sounds of the sheep were just keeping me up (freeing my bike from the cycle store was a lot easier than getting into the bunkhouse - it was only a four number code and the combination had something to do with Kronenburg) As I walked down to the main road, I saw the owners of the Yew Tree who wished me well on the rest of the ride.

I’d like to take back what I said about English A roads, todays ride was really quite nice. Rape is amazing, i’m not talking aggravated sexual assault, bu the bright yellow fields which pop up along the way in the countryside. I’d love to know what it’s for, I’ve heard of rape seed oil, but surely it’s not all for that…

Another fairly flat day in terms of hills, but more bright sunshine. My first landmark was Leominster where they were holding some kind of festival. All morning I had seen classic cars and bikes going past me, and it finally became apparent where they were going.

Coming into Gloucester it became apparent the benefits of cycling, as I was able to ride straight through the pedestrianised centre of the city, reducing my ride by about 2 miles. If only this had been the case in Glasgow.

After this I reached Slimbridge quite quickly. I’ve been here for a couple of hours, waiting for the hostel to open. I had hoped to find a pub with a television to catch the end of the Premiership season, but the pub has no Sky TV.

It’s time now to go and freshen up, i’ve done 80 miles in the sunshine, I must stink.

When I was cycling down, I had a call from a work colleague who was in the area and wondered if I fancied meeting for a drink. I told him about the pub I had just been in and arranged to meet him after I had booked into the hostel and changed.

About 30 minutes later, I had a call and walked down to meet him. I really appreciated the visit, but it also felt a bit weird, for the last couple of weeks, work has been at least 876 miles away and a reminder of that was odd. That said all the talk was of the ride, accommodation and views and not the office… It also included another question about the state of my bottom. I’ve never considered it one of my better features, but it’s the one thing that keeps getting all the attention in the phone calls.

After a meal and a few drinks, he got in the car back to London and the world of the office. I’ve still got four days in the saddle and I know where I’d rather be.

Slimbridge is famed for it’s bird sanctuary, so before going to the hostel I started down the lane towards the canal and the marshes. I talked to a few of the locals and people on the barges which made for a lovely end to the day.

JOG-LE Day 10 Chester to All Stretton 10/5/08

Last night the hostel was hellish, lights going on and off all night, noisy drunken locals and specially developed mattresses that were both uncomfortable and really noisy whenever you moved.

I never thought I would consider a 50 mile cycle a gentle day, but that’s what today was. Lance Armstrong had a mantra of ‘Never Look Up’, i’d disagreed with him thus far as through Scotland, The Lakes and Dales the views have been great. He was right though, today English (and Welsh) A roads aren’t any more interesting than looking at the tarmac underfoot.

Heading out of Chester towards Wrexham I soon crossed the border into Wales, as they helpfully translate every sign into English and Welsh.

I thought I could get a head start into learning Welsh, which is another of my challenges. My ability to remember any Welsh language thus far has been atrocious. the only word that seems to have stuck is anabl, which means disabled, and this is only as the girl I sit next to at work went to school in Wales and being called Annabel was mocked ruthlessly (the kind of thing you should never tell me). That said I think I have a new favourite word ‘Industrial’ seems to be spelt – DYLLDPORTADLLYNCHTPCH or something similar. From Wrexham the road to Oswestry went over a couple of huge bridges and back into England. I’d only ever been to Oswestry once before on a canal boat holiday along the Llangollen canal and I was very pleased to see that stretch of water again, as it brought back some fun memories.

The ride today despite being bland was all about memories, and it got quite emotional. I’m very aware that in 3 days time i’m going to visit the church where Richard is buried and I was trying to work out what i’m going to say to him. Thank you seems an odd opening but this year is about him and 10 years on he’s still giving me the best time of my life.

My ride today took me to Shrewsbury where I had to buy a new map as I couldn’t work out which road i needed to take to get to the hostel. Getting into the village I stopped at the pub which is listed as being closest to the hostel to kill a few hours, and write a few notes. The pub is lovely and I have booked to eat here later.

Weird thing today, my arms have bobbled up, despite best efforts with aftersun and lotions, i’m going to peel tomorrow. I need to get showered an changed, so I am going to go up to the hostel and see if I can get in early…

When I got to the hostel I had a shock, all of the beds seemed to be being used. The hostel is pretty tiny with only 10 beds.

I had the access code in my phone and the details of where I was supposed to be staying but, all of the beds seemed to be being used. I called the manager who explained there were only 8 others staying and they must have spread out a bit, but they would sort it when the group returned from their walk.

When the group got came back, they were really good about moving. After setting up my bed, I went back down to the Yew Tree for the reservation I had made. The guys in the hostel were also head down to the pub so we agreed to meet later on.

When they turned up, I was just about to be served and the group were told, the place was fully booked. I felt like the worst thing ever, firstly I had displaced a couple of the guys from their beds, then I preceded to start a great meal in front of them… The group tried to explain they had attempted to book a few days earlier and were told it’d be fine for them just to turn up.

All the time, I just felt worse and worse, and couldn’t really appreciate my meal. Eventually the group started to make alternate plans about a curry in the local town, when the landlord twigged what was going on, the pub had taken the call the week prior as a reservation but the men in the group had not mentioned the bunkhouse at any point and that was what their table had been reserved under.

Knowing they had been sorted I relaxed and made my way back to the hostel, this is where I realised i’d made a huge error. Before going out I had put my phone and I-Pod on charge. Unfortunately I hadn’t bothered to learn the code for the door before leaving.

I have a little party trick where I can borrow someone’s mobile phone and memorise a number at random which will stick for a few hours. Unfortunately I hadn’t ever tried to learn the number, just typed it into the lock directly from my phone. This meant I was stranded outside the building, I tried to force myself to remember, attempting to visualise what I’d done earlier – trying 3 or 4 different combinations, but none were right.

I started to walk back down to the pub to ask one of hte others the code, it’s stupid that something a small as this could have scuppered my ride, with all my gear trapped inside and me outside.

Thankfully when walking down I saw the Bunkhouse owners returning from a walk down the Long Mynd who were able to let me know the right numbers and I could get to my bed and some sleep.

JOG-LE Day 9 Ingleton to Chester 9/5/08

Despite the hostel not being where I expected it to be, I had a very nice night in Ingleton. On the advice of the of the hostel manager I visited the Whetsheaf in town which was lovely. I walked in and feared a bum steer, as no menus on the table, but on second glance there was a huge chalk boardabove the fire with many lovely sounding items. the pub seemed to be the hub of the community and everytone seemed to know each other.

Like the pubs, I have noticed how important rural Post Offices are. They really are the focal point of the villages, also doubling up as the local shop in most places. I’ve never understood the furore about them getting closed down, but now it’s apparent – everyone should do there utmost to keep them open!

Today was very odd, I already knew it was going to be a long ride. The 90 I had planned was extended by the extra miles to Ingleton so I took the decision to leave extra early today. I was very worried about missing my appointment with Paul in Chester, who had supplies for me which were necessary to reach Land’s End.

Setting off at 6:40 I rode for nearly an hour before I stopped covering ground which I had ridden the day before. My major fear was missing the meet up with Paul and it changed the entire complexion of the ride today.The night before I broke the ride down into component parts, so I had definite targets – Lancaster / Preston / Liverpool / Birkenhead and Chester.

When planning the route I hadn’t considered whether bikes were allowed through the Mersey Tunnels, so I also planned the a contingency route through Widnes, which would add another 20 miles to the day. (I’ve since looked into the Mersey Tunnel bylaws – and you’re not allowed to cycle through the tunnels – doh!)

With miles to cover, today was a day to get the head down and tick off the miles. In no time I was through Lancaster and Preston. Leaving earlier it also meant that the temperature was cooler and there was less traffic on the road.

Joining the road to Liverpool, I decided to make a rest stop in Ormskirk and take a quick time check. I was shocked to find it was only 11am. I felt sure now that I would make the rendezvous with Paul, but I still had the uncertainty of the route and the tunnels.

I finally spotted my first Red Lion pub on the route, I was at a junction with Red Lion Way in Little Sutton and slowly it dawned on me that it had to be named that for a reason, after a little exploration I managed to find the Olde Red Lion and jumped off the bike for the picture. My first Red Lion in over 500 miles.

The road to Liverpool went past Anfield, Goodison Park and Aintree before sweeping to the tunnel. I checked and checked again, and there definitely no signs to say no cycles, so I took the plunge, it was a thoroughly unpleasat experience, the air quality was attrocious, the lanes were very narrow and it felt dangerous and claustrophobic. I emerged from the tunnels dripping with sweat and to see two police cars, my heart dropped. I felt sure I was going to get pulled over, but thankfully no signs of flashing lights, so I went into the toll free motorbike lane and rode off.

Once a mile or so down the road, I got off the bike and sat down, I was feeling very rough from all the pollution and I needed to get some fresh air into my lungs.

From then the ride to Chester was quite easy (barring my inability to navigate cities and trouble locating the hostel). Paul was in Chester to cover the 3 day race meeting and I reached the Roman wall next to the race course by 3 o’clock.

The town was crazy, the course is quite small but thousands of people packed the stands, all in summer dresses and suits. After watching a race, I cycled to the hostel to change and get back to the track for the last couple of races and to meet up with Paul.

The town was a madhouse with thousands of drunk people – it also presented a problem I hadn’t expected. Due to the races all of the pubs and bars seemed to be running a door policy, which meant shirts and shoes. My trainers, canvas trousers and flip flops outfit didn’t quite make the grade – if you were absolutely trollied but dressed correctly you were welcomed in with open arms. I couldn’t really explain I hadn’t packed for this eventuality when I set out on my ride.

Eventually we found a bar that would allow us in and after Paul sent his last bit of copy across to the paper we had a few drinks. We did a quick swap – I was now in possession of a few new pairs of socks and Paul took a few things back to London for me, like the maps i had fallen off, the daily route sheets I had completed and various tat I’d picked up on the ride like mini nessies, mint cake and chocolate bars…

It was odd seeing Paul as this journey has been so seperate from home and normality (despite the calls and texts). It might have also sparked a possible spin off bike ride for the horse racing community from the home of the English Derby in Epsom to the Frech Derby in Chantilly – watch this space.

Having been to so many remote towns, it was odd to be surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of drunken revellers, I missed the quiet of the Highlands.

I wish I could comment on the music, but nothing springs to mind today. I think sleep is in order, only 60 odd miles tomorrow, then the hills of Devon and Cornwall await.

JOG-LE Day 8 Kendal to Ingleton

I’m not sure how many people would consider 35 miles as a rest day but that’s what happened today.

I left my bags in storage at the hostel and had the morning off to explore Kendal, I wanted to get some essentials. Wary of the storms I had been through in Scotland, I wanted to find some way of waterproofing my feet in case that happened again and also to find one of John’s ‘Wet Wainwright’ guides.

The weirdest thing was trying to relax and not think about the ride, I found myself walking through the town to scope out the best road to be leaving on. When I was finally happy with that I spent some time looking through the numerous hiking shops, bike stores and book retailers. The people in the bookshops tried their best to help me find one of John’s guides – unfortunately, there’s tons of books about the Lake District, and without a surname I had little chance.

My other shopping trip was more successful and I now own a pair of neoprene booties, which should in theory  keep my feet dry should this spell of lovely weather end. With my purchases (I had to buy the obligatory bar of Kendal Mint Cake) I went back to the hostel to get changed and back on the bike.

Due to some strange reason, Carnforth’s youth hostel is not actually in Carnforth, or even in Lancashire but 14 miles north east in the North Yorkshire town of Ingleton. So you can imagine my frustration when I got to Carnforth centre and toured around it twice looking for the road before getting the maps out again and calling the YHA.

The idea of heading back North appalled me but as it was already 3 o’clock due to my rest morning the closest hostel South was Liverpool (60 miles away). Not liking the idea of getting to an unknown hostel at about 10 pm I decided to go up to Inglethon.

A cyclist from Carnforth tried to tell me about the best way to get over to Ingleton warning me that it was a couple of long steep climbs effectively nullifying my rest day. Tomorrows ride also looks a little more daunting now, I have to hope for kind windsas it’s a long old slog, but one of the few I am beholden to as I have a rendezvous with my housemate to collect some fresh clothes.

Kendal was an interesting hostel, I was in a room with a man doing the W2W – coast to coast cycle ride, he was very talkative – he had some stange ideas and concepts, like the idea of having a best bike, but I couldn’t really cope with him and the flow of words so I made an escape to the pubs, which were a little odd. I tried to find a place with a bit of life in it but all of the pubs were dominated by the Scottish football or rolling news about the disaster in Burma. This only seemed to provoke a particularly forthright pensioner to lecture me on the true nature of the North / South divide.

Still no Red Lion pubs, but this diversion into North Yorkshire could very well help. Tomorrow is going to be a slog. Other guests in the hostel seem nice. Still no youths, a grandfather and grandmother amongst others… I’m off to find food. Probably an early night tonight as I’m wary about missing Paul in Chester tomorrow.

JOG-LE Day 7 Lockerbie to Kendal

Due to yesterdays decision to go off route, today was another adventure. It saw me fall off one map and shoot far into another. I finished the A74 cycle route which turned from the road shadowing the motorway, to a farm track which headed off to Gretna and the English border.

Reaching the edge of Gretna I was on the lookout for a gorgeous red haired girl to marry and pass my mums challenge, but sadly at around 11am there were none to be found,

As I had reached the border I decided to jump off the bike to take a few photographs, I also decided to eat some breakfast in the weird no mans land that exists between the 2 signs, where I couldn’t be sure where I really was.

The idea was then to ride straight to Carlisle and onto Penrith then Kendal… As a final twist of fate Scotland then threw me a curve ball. The road I had planned to go down was closed to cyclists and I was forced back over the border for an extra 10 miles before getting on the A7 and a route to Carlisle.

Unlike my experience with Glasgow navigating Carlisle was a doddle, with the roads feeding into one another and I was halfway to Penrith without even thinking about it.

My only fear about today was Shap a 1,400 ft peak midway between Penrith and Kendal. This place had been mentioned by a number of people i had met in hostels, including the man who said that after once you get over the top it’s downhill all the way to Lancaster.

Having navigated what must be one of the UK’s most dangerous roads (I kept passing signs that said there had been 17 fatal accidents and 12 serious ones on the road in the previous year in what was only 17 miles of tarmac).

At Penrith I had a look around as it was only two o’clock and with only 30 miles left I would get to the hostel early. The town had a huge millstone at its centre which explained all about how a river had been rerouted to serve it and the flow of water was regulated by the amount that could flow through the stone.

When I looked back at the fact I had been wasting time reading about stones I realised i was simply dithering and trying to put off the climb over Shap. On the ride I had seen some very strange roadside signs including possibly the only one with a horse pulling a wheelchair in the country, but at this point dear reader I was sorely tempted to end the ride there and then. I saw a sign that sent a chill through my spine – BEWARE RED SQUIRRELS – followed shortly by caution red squirrels, from what I remember they were all but wiped out by American grey squirrels, I can only say thank god, as they were obviously highly dangerous animals.

When I got to Shap it wasn’t as bad as it had been built up to be, granted it was steep and long but it was also beautiful. The weirdest thing was the sign that was by the roadside, all it had was the Conservatives name and logo, which just made me smile, at least it was a change from B&Bs – Boris and Cameron are obviously making noises in the regions.

Kendal is a lovely town, i’ve showered and applied tons of aftersun, it’s time to walk around the town. I might have a few drinks tonight as it’s only a short ride tomorrow of 20 miles and I haven’t had much of a break so far.

Today’s musical highlight was odd – Cupid draw back your bow coincided with reaching the top of Shap summit, which was met with joy. I was happily singing out (and swallowing flies). The way down was pretty hairy, as it was very steep in places.

Other things of note were a cover of Cry me a River, where a hawk quickly swooped past my face at a huge speed. A tractor had been going through the field and disturbed something. I am not sure if it caught anything but it made me glad i am not a rodent.

Hopefully another gorgeous day tomorrow, as they said on the local news it was hotter than Menorca here…
