JOG-LE Day 8 Kendal to Ingleton

I’m not sure how many people would consider 35 miles as a rest day but that’s what happened today.

I left my bags in storage at the hostel and had the morning off to explore Kendal, I wanted to get some essentials. Wary of the storms I had been through in Scotland, I wanted to find some way of waterproofing my feet in case that happened again and also to find one of John’s ‘Wet Wainwright’ guides.

The weirdest thing was trying to relax and not think about the ride, I found myself walking through the town to scope out the best road to be leaving on. When I was finally happy with that I spent some time looking through the numerous hiking shops, bike stores and book retailers. The people in the bookshops tried their best to help me find one of John’s guides – unfortunately, there’s tons of books about the Lake District, and without a surname I had little chance.

My other shopping trip was more successful and I now own a pair of neoprene booties, which should in theory  keep my feet dry should this spell of lovely weather end. With my purchases (I had to buy the obligatory bar of Kendal Mint Cake) I went back to the hostel to get changed and back on the bike.

Due to some strange reason, Carnforth’s youth hostel is not actually in Carnforth, or even in Lancashire but 14 miles north east in the North Yorkshire town of Ingleton. So you can imagine my frustration when I got to Carnforth centre and toured around it twice looking for the road before getting the maps out again and calling the YHA.

The idea of heading back North appalled me but as it was already 3 o’clock due to my rest morning the closest hostel South was Liverpool (60 miles away). Not liking the idea of getting to an unknown hostel at about 10 pm I decided to go up to Inglethon.

A cyclist from Carnforth tried to tell me about the best way to get over to Ingleton warning me that it was a couple of long steep climbs effectively nullifying my rest day. Tomorrows ride also looks a little more daunting now, I have to hope for kind windsas it’s a long old slog, but one of the few I am beholden to as I have a rendezvous with my housemate to collect some fresh clothes.

Kendal was an interesting hostel, I was in a room with a man doing the W2W – coast to coast cycle ride, he was very talkative – he had some stange ideas and concepts, like the idea of having a best bike, but I couldn’t really cope with him and the flow of words so I made an escape to the pubs, which were a little odd. I tried to find a place with a bit of life in it but all of the pubs were dominated by the Scottish football or rolling news about the disaster in Burma. This only seemed to provoke a particularly forthright pensioner to lecture me on the true nature of the North / South divide.

Still no Red Lion pubs, but this diversion into North Yorkshire could very well help. Tomorrow is going to be a slog. Other guests in the hostel seem nice. Still no youths, a grandfather and grandmother amongst others… I’m off to find food. Probably an early night tonight as I’m wary about missing Paul in Chester tomorrow.
